Technologies

PMC’s inventions cover methods involved in the transmission and reception of digital content in the media delivery process, and transcend any one stage of this process. The technology also provides an automated foundation upon which various standards and/or operating systems function.

PMC’s inventions are platform agnostic: they are not television-centric, but rather apply to any system that delivers personalized and interactive digital information through automated control.

PMC’s inventions fall into five categories:

Personalized Presentation of Content

PMC’s technology addresses the personalization of programming – whether audio, video, graphics, or data – by combining generic content with content specific to an individual receiver device or a user of that receiver device. The inventions also cover methods used to control the receiver in order to display the personalized content.

Example applications include targeted advertising, customized web pages, or personalized television.

Interactive Programming

The PMC technology allows users to interact with the programming they receive. The inventions cover the delivery and presentation of media, including options that allow a user to control what they receive. Users can also interact with received content in order to receive or request additional services or information that may be of interest.

Example applications include search, online shopping, online gaming, or interactive advertising.

Control of Multimedia Receivers

PMC’s inventions address the reception of software used to remotely program or update receivers. For instance, the inventions cover the delivery of software that would subsequently initiate automatic updates to the operating system of a receiver device, such as a personal computer, smartphone, or set-top box. The technologies also cover the delivery of software, such as a mobile app, that would then enable a receiver device to order and receive media content.

Example applications include operating system updates/upgrades, web-based JavaScript applications, mobile device App installation, or media player updates.

Delivery of Content

This PMC technology addresses methods for delivering packaged information in a way that allows a receiver device to unbundle the programming it has received. The technologies would, for example, allow a receiver to decrypt protected content; to broadcast or schedule content; and to process content that has been received in different formats.

Example applications include digital rights management, search/targeted advertising, web conferencing, augmentation of content with geo-location data, or web caching.

System Automation

These inventions cover the use of control signals that have been embedded within a transmission to selectively control and monitor programming delivered over a network. For instance, embedded control signals could be used to control the reception of content; to collect statistics stored within a user’s receiver device; to schedule received programming; or to control a receiver device remotely.

Example applications include digital television reception, automated billing, program delivery control, or control of networked appliances (such as home refrigerators or stoves),
